You are facing a new chapter in your life. Maybe you already have a job on hand, maybe you will be looking for a job or continuing with your part time student job. In any case this guide is relevant for you.
In the transition from student to graduate there are a number of important dates and deadlines you need to keep track of in order to approach the next chapter of your life with peace of mind.
When you became a student member, you indicated the expected date of your graduation. There are several ways you can finish your studies:
Once you know the exact date, you need to change your status of studerende (student) to nyuddannet (graduate).
If you postpone the completion of your studies by more than 1 month, you need to extend your free student membership. That way you avoid receiving a membership fee invoice.
You will need to fill out the Forlængelse af gratis studiemedlemskab (Extension of free student membership) form at Mit AKA, where you can enter your new expected completion date.
The law prohibits free student membership for persons over the age of 30. Therefore, if you are 30 years old or more, you must complete the Forlængelse af betalende studiemedlemskab form (Extension of paying student membership form).
You will find links to the mentioned forms at the end of the guide.
If you are completing a bachelor's degree and are proceeding your graduate studies in either Denmark or abroad, we recommend that you change your membership status to nyuddannet (graduate). You will find a link to the form at the end of this guide. On the same form you can indicate that you are proceeding your graduate studies.
This way, you will be guaranteed unemployment benefits if you decide to cancel your graduate program. Once you change your status to a nyuddannet (graduate), we will ensure that your free membership continues during your graduate studies.
Once you know the exact date of the completion of your education, you need to change your status from studerende (student) to nyuddannet (graduate). If you know that you will finish within the next month, but do not know the exact date, please wait until you know the exact date.
You must change your status within 14 days of your last exam. This applies to all recent graduates, whether or not you have a job after graduating.
When you meet the 14-day deadline, you will be able to receive unemployment benefits. If you miss the deadline, you have to have 1 year of full time work before you can receive unemployment benefits.
You change your status by filling out the Skift medlemsstatus fra studerende til nyuddannet form (Change membership status from student to graduate form) at My AKA (you can find a link to the form at the end of this guide).
If you have had a full-time job during your studies and earned more than 20.000 d.kr. pr. month, please call us before you change your status. Because of your job you may be able to receive a higher unemployment benefit rate.
If you have not been a member during your studies, the same 14-day rule applies to secure your right to unemployment benefits as a graduate. You should, then, apply for membership by completing the Bliv medlem af Akademikernes A-kasse form (Become a member of Akademikernes A-kasse form). You can find the application link Bliv medlem at aka.dk.
You will then be able to receive unemployment benefits 1 month + 1 day after your last exam. Also, at that time you need to register as unemployed at jobnet.dk.
When you have been a student member for 1 year or more, you can receive unemployment benefits from the day after your last exam. However, this requires that you register at jobnet.dk that same day.
If you have a job on hand directly after you complete your studies, you must change your status to nyuddannet (graduate) as soon as possible after graduating and no later than 14 days after your last exam. This way you can apply for unemployment benefits if you are without a job at a later date.
If you have a job on hand, which will start at some other point than right after your graduation, you will also need to change your status to a nyuddannet (graduate) no later than 14 days after your last exam. In addition, you must register at jobnet.dk the day after your last exam and notify the job center of the date, when you will be starting your job. You will be able to apply for unemployment benefits in the period from the time you graduate and until you start your job.
In order to receive unemployment benefits you need to register as unemployed at jobnet.dk.
If you have been a student member for 1-11 months, you have to register as unemployed exactly 1 month + one day after your last exam, which is the day from which you are able to receive unemployment benefits. Still, please, remember to change your status from student to graduate no later than 14 days after your last exam.
If you have been a student member for 11-12 months, please call us. You may be able to receive unemployment benefits a bit earlier. Still, please, remember to change your status from student to graduate no later than 14 days after your last exam.
When you are no longer a student, you have to pay for the membership of Akademikernes A-kasse. This is the case from the first day after your last exam. Therefore, it is important that you let us know if you postpone the completion of your studies. This way, you avoid receiving a membership fee invoice.
Approximately 14 days before the payment deadline you will receive a letter by mail with the payment information. We recommend you sign up for Betalingsservice (automatic payment), but you can only do so after paying manually the first time. You pay in advance for one quarter at a time.
You can continue with your student job part-time when you are unemployed. In that case, you can apply for supplementary unemployment benefits. You do this by stating that you will continue in a part time job, when you fill out the ledighedserklæring (your unemployment benefit application).
If, on the other hand, you are considering quitting your student job, it is important that you resign and do so before you finish your studies. You will get a quarantine of 3 weeks, if you quit the job after completing your education. This means that you cannot get unemployment benefits for 3 weeks. Therefore, please contact us well in advance, if you are considering quitting your student job.
Maybe you plan on having a much needed holiday after you graduate? In that case, you should register at jobnet.dk after your holiday. When you register as unemployed at jobnet.dk you must be ready to take a job or to participate in meetings with both us and the job center - and you can't do that when you are on holiday.
If you choose to go on holiday a little later, you must report your holiday to the job center. If there are more than 14 days away, you can report it on jobnet.dk. If there are less than 14 days away, please call the job center.
Even if you are sick, when you graduate, you still have to register at jobnet.dk. At jobnet.dk, you must register sick as well, please. You are eligible to receive unemployment benefits during the first 14 days of your illness period.
